Alaska - "Carrying the Star" is a traditional Christmas procession. Young and old carry elaborately decorated tinsel trimmed wheels with eight points, commonly as big as umbrellas. They are highlighted with a centre picture of either an angel or the nativity scene. They are carried for three nights from January 7th over icy snow topped roads. The stars record the angels who announced the birth of Christ. Families lovingly enounce the stars. Some are more than a hundred years old!

Vanilla and Rum Sauces Make Holiday Desserts extra

My mother's parents were English and many of the meals she fixed for us reflected this heritage. Christmas evening meal was all the time roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. sweetmeat was all the time plum pudding with warm sauce. There are many recipes for plum pudding and all are labor intensive. Mom made plum pudding from scratch a few times, but it was so much work she finally bought Crosse and Blackwell pudding imported from England.

The plum pudding was served with warm vanilla or rum sauce. I did not like the rich pudding, so I only ate a spoonful. But I could have eaten an whole bowl of sauce. Mom also served apple pie with warm vanilla sauce. The combination of warm sauce and fresh pie from the oven was heavenly. With a merge of changes the vanilla sauce recipe becomes rum sauce or rum-raisin sauce.

I have lightened the recipe by using Splenda Blend for Baking instead of sugar and elminating the half cup of butter in the customary recipe. However, I have added a tablespoon of butter for flavor. Warm vanilla and rum sauce turn simple cakes -- vanilla, apple, and spice -- into extra desserts. Top frozen waffles with vanilla ice cream and sauce and you have one of the best desserts on the planet. adornment with a twist of orange peel and fresh mint to make your holiday desserts more festive.

Warm Vanilla Sauce

Ingredients

1/2 cup Splenda Blend for Baking

2 tablespoons cornstarch

1/2 teaspoon light salt

2 cups hot water

1 tablespoon butter (no substitutions)

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

dash of freshly grated nutmeg

Method

Combine the Splenda Blend for Baking, cornstarch, and salt in a small saucepan. Whisk in hot water. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until sauce has thickened. remove from heat. Add vanilla passage and nutmeg. Makes 8 servings.

Warm Rum Sauce

Omit the vanilla and nutmeg. Make the sauce and remove from heat. Add 2 teaspoons of rum extract.

Warm Rum-Raisin Sauce

Omit the vanilla and nutmeg. Add 1/4 cup raisins to the sauce and cook until thickened. remove from heat and add 2 teaspoons of rum extract.

The best day to do Christmas shopping is the day that the market are full of new Christmas merchandize that has not been picked over.

There is a plethora of clerks a smiling.

The clerks joke with you, help you find the right set of earrings for each of your twenty-three granddaughters, binoculars for your nine grandsons, a stuffed lion for your great granddaughter, books for your kids and their spouses, and then the clerks say, "Have a nice Thanksgiving! Can we help you to the car?"

Now you have guessed the day, haven't you?

How many said, "Christmas Eve just before the market close when the market panic if they have too much leftover merchandise. They cut their prices and you buy, buy, buy!

If you are not poor, you are wrong. Now days, the market have to cut their prices much earlier to compete with Target® and Wal-mart®.

The best day to shop is the day before Thanksgiving.

Stay-at-home moms are all baking pies.

Working moms are heading right for the grocery store at noon and after work.

Nobody goes shopping that day but my wife and I and a few itsybitsy old ladies who have "caught on."

We went shopping this morning and were home by 3:30 p.m. That was after I had the salmon at the Sizzler® and my wife her usual salad bar. I had a salad bar too.

When we got to the Sizzler®, I was starved from shopping for our five children, their spouses, our 32 grandchildren, together with two new spouses, and our great grandchild that still says, "Goo, Goo!" (Our triplets still say, "Goo, Goo!" too.)

I started with a bowl of clam chowder, then salad, then the salmon, then the ice cream. Yum! Yum!

Back in our home town exhausted by the metropolis of Twin Falls with its thousands of people, I laid down on the bed to get the kink out of my back that I all the time get when shopping.

When I woke up, I had missed Jeopardy®.

That's when I decided that I had to get the presents under-wrapped (that is in the wrapping under the pretty stuff. I made up the word. Go ahead and use it).

I needed to write the name of the child, grandchild, or great grandchild on the inner wrapping or my wife might send a wrong present to a wrong person in a wrong state!

She didn't want to, but she gave me a hand.

Now I'm sure that we will be sending a wrong present to a wrong person in a wrong state.

But we have abundance of time to do it!

Shop early!

Be of good cheer!

Damn the torpedoes, Full Speed Ahead!
